AU History for DS
This AU starts before Harry was born. After James Potter saves Severus Snape from Remus Lupin one full moon night in their sixth year, a bond between them grows and they fall in love. It's not much later that they married and want to have a family. Together they decide to call upon their mutual friend, Lily Evans, to help give them a child. They both try to get her pregnant and on 31st July 1980, their son arrived. He was obviously James' son rather than Severus' so he was named Harry James Potter.
It was the following July that Severus was given the Potions Master job at Hogwarts. Albus Dumbledore had arrived for Harry's first birthday to deliver the news. And two months later, on the Halloween of that same year, Severus was given the worst news imaginable. Both Lily and James had died at the hands of Lord Voldemort. But there was a ray of hope for the old Slytherin, his son, Harry Potter, had some how survived.
Dumbledore had wanted to send Harry to his mother's sister's house where old magic would keep him safe until he was ready to deal with his destiny. But Severus refused to part with his son. After hours of arguement, Dumbledore finally relented on the grounds Severus raised Harry inside Hogwarts, the second most safest place for the boy. Severus gladly agreed and a room was built under extending from Snape's own bedroom so the boy could grow up in relative privacy.
For the next ten years, Harry grew up in happiness. It took him a few years to ask about his scar and the night he got it and Severus told him part of the truth when he was asked. He told him about his mother and how she died to save him from the most powerful evil wizard of all time. But he never mentioned James. It was too hard. So Harry grew up thinking Snape was his natural birth father, never really wondering about the difference in last names until he was about eight years old.
Harry's life in Hogwarts was better than the average wizard. He was allowed to roam the castle alone from the age of six as long as he didn't explore the grounds and he got to meet the other students and became friends with those of all houses as he didn't have one of his own. He did tend to stick to the Slytherins as his father was the Head of their House but he also enjoyed the company of the Gryffindors as that was his mother's House.
From the age of five, Snape started to teach Harry the basic Muggle education he would have gotten had they not lived in Hogwarts. But he also began to teach him Potions from this age as well. As this art did not require a wand, he decided he wanted to teach his son from as early an age as possible and turned out that Harry seemed to have a knack for it just as he had. Harry looked forward to the Potions lessons as much as any except one. Flying. He didn't understand why but he loved watching the Quidditch matches more than anything else and Severus knew he was James' son.
So, at age eight, Severus finally relented and let Harry join the other first years in flying lessons. It turned out that Harry had even more of a knack for flying than he did for potions though Snape didn't expect anything less from the son of James Potter. He watched his son grow and become more and more like James, waiting for the days when he would have to come down hard on him. But they didn't come. Harry was never in trouble. He asked when he wanted something, and never argued when he couldn't have it. He was the perfect gentlemen, holding doors open for students and teachers alike and enjoying helping the first years find their way around in the first few weeks of term.
But it was also at age eight that Harry finally asked about their difference of surnames. Severus had wanted to tell him all about James but found he couldn't and told his son he would explain everything after he turned eleven. Harry nodded and accepted the fact, still wondering what the answers could be and excited for the prospect of turning eleven, not only for the idea of finally attending the school he called home but for the answer he sought.
July 31st 1991 - Harry's eleventh birthday was a sight to see. The house in Spinner's End had never been this full. All his friends from Hogwarts were crowded in the little house to bring the boy who lived into the next phase of his life but Harry James Potter was more excited about the answers he would receive that evening. And receive them he did. After everyone had gone home, Severus called Harry into the study, the one room in the house had been forbidden to go until now. He told his son about his real father, James, and the truth about their surnames and why he hadn't wanted to talk about it before. Harry took it all in his stride, just listening and not asking questions. Snape opened a cabinet which held everything about James that he had saved from the house in Godric's Hollow but Harry told Snape that he would also be his father and he'd look at the James stuff later. In truth, Harry wanted to save his father the heartache of looking through pictures of the man he loved and lost.
Over the next month, Harry learnt a lot about James and Lily Potter. About how they were Gryffindors and in love until the night of the Whomping Willow Incident. He was glad the answers but worried about the house he would be sorted into on September 1st.
But of course. He never got that far. Did he?
